Born to Kvetch
Hi Reading Odyssey folks–
A fun call last night–thanks to Phil for providing the torchlight. A lot to ponder–went back and re-read some stuff last night, off our discussion.
The book that I mentioned is by Michael Wex, “Born to Kvetch: Yiddish Language and Culture in All of Its Moods.” A fun read with some meat on its bones, delving into the nuances of words like “shmuck,” “putz,” and “shlong,” as well as historical and religious conditions that gave rise to the worldview embodied in Yiddish.
Here’s where to find it on Amazon:
To be continued!
