Hi Folks,

Two thoughts:

1) I think the inter-relation of people and gods is getting more clear now. The gods seem to be behind all events of chance in the minds of people. The story shows where the gods do seem to manipulate people and situations at will, but it also says that people too often blame their fortune (good or bad) on the gods. It comes out in the story more and more that if someone encounters a favorable wind or some other turn of chance then they say it's because "some god" put such a wind at their back.

The questions I'm wondering is if people of that time really thought that way about the gods affecting their lives so closely? Was this a way to accept the impact of chance on their lives? Are our modern gods also a way to assist us in accepting chance in our lives?

2) I've also noticed that this story reminds me of any entertaining story that has fiction sprinkled with reality and its structured in a way that you can pull out many lessons from the story if you choose to. There are leadership, followership, and relationship lessons and examples in this story that could be used as analogies to help teach people lessons in wisdom and how to make a successful decision. Analogies are powerful ways we humans learn and this story seems like a rich source of them. This reminds me of more modern stories such as "The Twilight Zone" in the 1960's. Good science fiction has a lot of real science sprinkled with fiction and then throws in a lesson or two within an entertaining story. The Odsyssey doesn't come across as "science fiction", but its analogous in that I would call it "adventure fiction." There's a lot of life lessons in this story and by thinking of all of our lives as being our own individual adventures I can see this story as a teaching tool. I also see some details and themes that seemed to be used in christian bible stories (I gave an example on our last call) and it makes me wonder if this story was a precursor to biblical stories and modern biblical stories were a way to make judaism scalable by making it accessible to more people than just the core jewish community. Now there's a controversial thought. The equation is The Odyssey + The Old Testament + Some other stuff = New Testament.

The question I'm wondering is if The Odyssey was used as a teaching story of its time or was it meant to be pure entertainment or was it meant to be historical documentation?
