It's a very well written book by Xenophon, full of interesting episodes of what happened to the "10,000" Greek mercenaries trying to escape from Persia after Cyrus' death in battle. The movie "The Warriors" parallels the story and is set in New York City.</font></div>
<div align="left" style="text-align:left;"><font face="Arial" size="+0" color="#000000" style="font-family:Arial;font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">I have read parts of the Anabasis ("a going up the country") in Greek and found that my favorite English translation is the latest revised (by John Dillery) edition of the Loeb Classical Library. There are less expensive versions out there published by Penguin and Oxford Classics as well which, while being less literal, probably flow better.</font></div>
<div align="left" style="text-align:left;"><font face="Arial" size="+0" color="#000000" style="font-family:Arial;font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">There is a <u>great</u> book out recently (2006) called "Xenophon's Retreat" by Robin Waterfield. He physically takes the route that the 10,000 took through the hinterlands of Asia Minor and comments on the Anabasis the whole way.</font></div>

If so, then who's version is the best to read? I'm wondering this because I remember seeing a movie back in 1979 called "Warriors" and I hear its a bit of a cult action movie now. It was about a gang leader in New York who called all the disparate gangs together to unite under him to take over the city. His name was "Cyrus." He was killed during the big meeting and the gang called "Warriors" was unjustly accused of doing it so all the other gangs were out to get them. The movie is about their battles and trials as they fight their way back through all the different gangs looking for them until they return to
their home turf. I recently heard the movie used elements from Anabasis and this is where my interest in reading Anabasis comes from.</font></span></div>
