Hi everyone. My name is Janice Jewell and I am a high school English
teacher. After 15 years in the IT world, I needed to get back to my inner
English major, so I walked away from the business world, went back to school
for a Master's and started teaching 10 years ago.
I teach honors 9th and 12th graders, and in the interest of full disclosure,
yes, I do teach *The Odyssey*. However, far from making me some sort of
expert, I have realized that as many times as I go through this text,
there's is always something more to be learned. This translation was new to
me, so that's the first thing. Secondly, I really like the questions and
thematic access points that Pat has identified; all were different from what
I do with students. Also, I'm interested in hearing about the relevance of
a story like this from adults (very different from 9th graders). I'm hoping
to grow my own understanding of the book and enhance some of the ways I work
with it with students using what I learn from the group.
I learned about this opportunity from my husband who receives Pat's
newsletter. He's the musician; I'm the reader. We are acquainted with Pat
through the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in New York. My husband is the
musical "networker," I just tag along to a variety of places to hear great
music. Other hobbies: cooking, sampling good wine. One daugher (15 years
old) and one dog (boxer-shepherd rescue mutt) complete our household. They
are both very cool.
Can't wait to meet everyone.
Janice
