[Homer2010] Introduction

[Laura Strychalski]

My name is Laura Strychalski, and I am an architect in Philadelphia PA.
I grew up in Queens and Manhattan, studied and taught textile design in
Buffalo NY, then decided to change direction and moved down here for
graduate school.  I have always read a lot, but disliked enough English
lessons & teachers in 6-12 to make me avoid English classes in college.
But now that 11th-grade teacher Mrs. Whatever-her-name-was is finally
far enough behind me that I've gotten over that aversion,  I think it
would be a great experience to read and discuss classic literature, so
I'm game!

 

A few years ago my daughter was assigned an abridged Odyssey in grade
school, and I decided to try it myself (by listening to an audio
edition) so that we could discuss it.  I thought it was interesting that
this narrative is so embedded in our culture that I was already familiar
with many parts of the story despite never having read it.  

 

I'm looking forward to the discussion and to seeing (hearing?) how a
phone-based group works!
